Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise, is a dramatic foliage plant distinguished by its large, upright paddle-shaped leaves borne on sturdy stems. As the plant matures, the leaves naturally split along the veins, an adaptation that helps reduce wind resistance while contributing to its distinctive tropical appearance. Growing from a clumping base, it develops an impressive architectural form and can reach up to 3 metres indoors under favourable conditions. Mature specimens may also produce the striking white and blue bird-like flowers for which the genus is renowned.
Habitat: Can grow up to 3m tall. Prefers higher humidity and warmer temperatures. Avoid sudden temperature changes or draughts.
Light: Position in a spot with medium to bright, indirect light.
Water: Prefers moist, but not wet soil. Water when top inch of soil feels dry, reduce watering frequency in winter months.
Fertiliser: Will benefit from the application of a balanced plant fertiliser during peak growth periods.
