Glyphosate Free

Are the cut roses that you purchase introducing systemic poisons into your environment?

Each year, millions of rose stems are immersed in Roundup (Glyphosate) and imported into New Zealand!

Here in New Zealand the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) requires that all imported cut flowers be immersed in a glyphosate herbicide (Roundup) in the country of origin to certify that the roses are disease-free and ‘devitalised’. By law, imported roses are to be immersed in Roundup for 20 minutes. While they may initially look tight budded and healthy they are technically dead and will only last five to six days – half the vase life of our locally grown roses!

How harmful is Roundup?

Roundup is the brand name of a systemic, broad-spectrum herbicide that is used to kill weeds, especially perennials. The main active ingredient of Roundup is the isopropylamine salt of glyphosate, which received an EPA Toxicity Class of III (on a scale of I to IV, where IV is least dangerous) for oral and inhalation exposure.

Beyond the glyphosate salts content, commercial formulations of Roundup contain surfactants, which vary in nature and concentration. As a result, human poisoning with this herbicide is not with the main active ingredient alone, but with complex and variable mixtures. The European Union has classified Roundup as “dangerous for the environment” and “toxic for aquatic organisms”. This has resulted in the banning of Roundup in various countries due to its toxic effects on humans and wildlife.

How to avoid Roundup roses

By purchasing direct from a New Zealand grower, you can be assured that your roses won’t bring harmful systemic poisons into your environment. Furthermore, you will be supplied with the freshest of roses that have an excellent vase life.
